Alexander Francis Neil (born 9 June 1981 in Bellshill, Scotland) is a Scottish footballer currently playing for Hamilton Academical.

He is the joint longest serving captain in the Scottish Premier League, along with John Potter.

Career

A central midfielder, Neil began his career at Airdrie before joining Barnsley in 2000. Neil spent four years at Barnsley before joining Mansfield Town in 2004, where he spent only one season before signing for his current club Hamilton Academical.

Alex Neil is currently the team captain, being regarded as the most influential player on the pitch and in the SPL. This fact can be seen when you see the Accies previous standings in the Scottish Premier League, (with Alex Neil playing most every game) compared to their current form, having only won two games of the 2010-2011 season, now and for most of the season been at the bottom of the table. Alex Neil has been injured for most of this season and it is not confirmed when he will be back. Speaking to journalists though, due to the pain, he may never play football again after the season ends. This comes as a result of his injury which has kept him out all season. He said that he was in bearable, but constant pain when he played his first game this season.

He is a fan favorite to many of the Accies supporters. Neil won the Scottish First Division with Accies in 2008 alongside 20 year old James McCarthy and 23 year old, Scotland National Football Team international James McArthur, who both now play for Wigan Athletic F.C.

On 6 May 2011, Neil signed a new contract with Hamilton which will keep him there till May 2014.
